Deze vrouwelijke dj’s spreken zich uit over de ongelijkheid in de festival scene

We gaan de goede kant op, maar zijn er nog lang niet. Veel vrouwelijke dj’s merken nog steeds dat ze werken in een mannenwereld. Wat eigelijk gek is, want de dansvloer staat vaak net zo vol met mannen als met vrouwen. Dus waarom is dj dan meer een mannenberoep, dan zowel voor mannen en vrouwen?

Zeker in het elektronische genre domineren mannelijke dj’s nog steeds de line-up van menig groot festival. Jammer vinden wij, want er zijn genoeg vrouwelijke dj’s in dit genre die minstens net zo goed zijn als hun mannelijke collega’s.

Vrouwelijke dj’s vertellen over ongelijkheid

Veel vrouwelijke top dj’s merken dat er verandering komt in de verhouding tussen mannelijke en vrouwelijke dj’s op festivals. Dit jaar staan er meer vrouwelijke dj’s op de line-up van grote festivals dan vorig jaar en daar zijn wij blij om. Dj Annie Mac organiseert dit jaar de vijfde editie van haar festival ‘AMP Lost & Found’. Zij boekt dit jaar twintig vrouwelijke dj’s, waardoor het aantal mannelijke en vrouwelijke dj’s gelijk is. Hiermee wil zij andere festivals aansporen hetzelfde te doen en wij moedigen dit natuurlijk alleen maar aan.

De volgende vrouwelijke DJ’s draaien op het festival en deelden hun mening met Glamour UK over gender equality in de DJ scene.

“It’s so important to see equality on festival line ups, not as novelty but as normality. To see this happen it has to be of fundamental importance to men and women working behind the scenes. There needs to be equality not just on the line-ups but who is employed behind the scenes too. Change, balance and support needs to happen across the board in the music industry among club and festival promoters, agencies, record labels, publishers, etc”

“I think it’s about time that the equality on line-ups issue is being addressed. I feel like there’s always so many excuses being given about it. Or people say they have an equal line-up but all the women are at the bottom of the bill and therefore the worst paid. I think we’re going through a good moment where there’s a lot more attention on the issue, but I think the next phase is not just a balance of males to females, but also more female headliners being paid the same as the men.”

“I do feel that the tide is shifting towards [greater female representation], but I don’t think we are quite there yet. No doubt there are more and more women becoming part of many aspects of dance culture, which is amazing, but we still need to push harder to close the gap. For example, from my experience teaching in further education, Music Technology classes are still dominated by males and recruitment of females is still lower. We need to be working harder to make girls feel that they can pursue electronic music right from grass roots level so the gap doesn’t exist in future generations.”

Vrouwelijke dj’s om in de gaten te houden

Zeker in de techno scene zijn er genoeg vrouwen die het al gemaakt hebben en op veel festivals de headliner zijn. Denk hierbij aan Nina Kraviz, Amelie Lens, Nicole Moudaber, Charlotte de Witte, Paula Temple en noem maar op.

Eerder schreven we over Nederlandse vrouwelijke dj’s die je dit jaar in de gaten moet houden. Toch zijn er ook genoeg internationale vrouwen die de sterren van de hemel draaien.
