Wereldmeisjesdag – vandaag vragen we aandacht voor gelijkheid van meisjes

Vandaag is het Wereldmeisjesdag, een dag die volledig in het teken staat van de positie van jonge vrouwen. We vragen vandaag aandacht voor (het gebrek aan) de kansen voor deze meisjes. Ook Plan International zet zit hiervoor in en vraagt dit jaar aandacht voor leiderschap onder meisjes.

Het is nog altijd een feit dat vrouwen en meisjes anders worden behandeld dan mannen en jongens. Dat moet natuurlijk echt veranderen. Vandaag wordt hier gelukkig door veel initiatieven bij stil gestaan.

Wereldmeisjesdag

Vandaag is alweer de achtste keer dat we met Wereledmeisjesdag aandacht vragen voor de gelijkheid van meisjes. Plan International heeft dit jaar de focus gelegd op leiderschap onder meisjes. En dat doen ze met een prachtige actie.

In 2018 she wrote, directed and starred in her first short film, Kyenvu- the first Ugandan film to qualify for an Oscar. ? She’s also starting a fund for female filmmakers in Uganda to create five-minute short films. 2️⃣ Guneet Monga is one of India’s top independent film producers. ? She produces a lot of her work with other women filmmakers to stop narratives being solely controlled by men. “Change is happening in the last couple of years because women writers and women directors are creating powerful, complicated women on screen.” ? 3️⃣ Ash Mayfair made her feature directorial debut with an award-winning coming-of-age drama, The Third Wife. She’s currently developing her second feature film, a love story between a transgender singer and a dog-cage fighter. ? 4️⃣ Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers is a member of Kainai First Nation (Blood Tribe, Blackfoot Confederacy) as well as Sámi from Norway. Her directorial debut, which she also co-wrote, focused on the story of two women navigating the aftermath of domestic violence. “How can you imagine yourself doing these things if you can’t see it? Representation matters for young women, especially those who exist on the margins.” 5️⃣ Melina León is a writer and director from Lima, Peru. Her debut feature film, Canción sin Nombre (Song without a Name) was premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019 and made her the first female Peruvian filmmaker to present her work at the film festival. ? Our latest research, in collaboration with @gdigm found that the world’s most popular films are sending the message to girls and young women that leadership is mostly for men. We analysed the top 56 grossing films of 2018 and found that not 1 out of the top 10 films in 20 countries was directed by a woman. ?‍♀️ Help us #RewriteHerStory this Friday for Day of the Girl. Girl Takeovers

Vandaag vinden er namelijk wereldwijd duizenden Girl Takeovers plaats. Wat dit inhoudt? Meisjes uit meer dan zeventig landen geven vandaag voor één dag leiding op verschillende plekken zoals Google, YouTube of een ministerie. Even alle vrouwen aan de top, dus.

Directeur van Plan International Nederland, Monique van ‘t Hek, zegt: “Het is de hoogste tijd dat meisjes dezelfde kansen krijgen om uit te groeien tot krachtige leiders. Dit is nog niet altijd het geval, ook in Nederland niet. Aan de ambitie van de meisjes ligt het niet. Het zijn de omstandigheden en de perceptie rondom vrouwen en leidinggevende functies, die aandacht vragen. Als initiatiefnemer van deze belangrijke dag doen wij er alles aan om dit te veranderen. Girls Get Equal is dan ook een heel belangrijke boodschap vandaag.”

Meisjes in leidinggevende functies, wat houdt dit precies in? In Nederland worden er deze hele week verschillende functies overgenomen door meisjes. Onder andere Lodewijk Asscher, Sven Sauvé en Aimée Kiene dragen hun positie over aan meisjes. Deze korte overnames staan symbool voor gelijke rechten en kansen, dingen die in deze wereld nog steeds niet vanzelfsprekend zijn.
